Hee Haw Farms

We went to Hee Haws this past Saturday. The weather was beautiful and there was lots of fun to be had. Every activity and holiday is so much more fun with kids.

The kids loved petting the baby piglets at the little petting zoo.

Adelyn feeding the little cow that was only six weeks old. It was so gentle and sweet, and it's hide was so white and soft.

Here's the HUGE mommy pig with her cute little new babies.

The kids went on the animal train. Annalise was in the pig car, Preston in the cow, and Addie in the horse.

The big potato sack slide was the best! Preston's face is classic.

And Ryan took Annalise on the ride of her life. She loved it!

We went on a Trick-or Treat hay ride. The characters threw out handfuls of candy if we shouted "Hee Haw!"

This picture makes me laugh! Addie looks normal, Annalise is doing a kissy face, and Preston looks totally SASSY. He is totally posing!

Spider Cookies

We were supposed to bring a spooky dessert to a Halloween Party this year and I thought we should make home-made Oreo spider cookies. They were so much fun to make and oh so delicious!

We used Twizzlers Pull and Peel for the legs and Skittles for the eyes. Adelyn was pretty proud of our genius.

Ryan thought of the idea of doing candy corn for fangs, but I didn't want to have to run back to the store. But there's always next year...

Adelyn wanted to take a picture of me too, but she left out the cookies. :)

Halloween Party

We went to my friend Rachelle's big annual Halloween Party this year. Her parents hosted it at their home. It was so much fun. There was great food, carnival games, Halloween crafts, and lots of kids and toys. My little family had a great time.

Annalise dressed up as Ariel this year. She loves that she already has red hair.

 Adelyn is the beautiful Rapunzel.

And Preston is Jake from "Jake and the Neverland Pirates." We let his hair grow out so he could have spiky hair.

Ryan just put on his army get-up. I was a witch (wearing regular clothes and a witch hat because none of my black dresses fit), but I never got my picture taken.

This is Rachelle and her wonderful mom Tami. They are such good sports to put up with so much chaos and kids year after year.

Preston being a tough-guy pirate. His face is hilarious!

37 Weeks

I am not one of those people who likes to take many pictures of myself pregnant, but you never know which pregnancy might be your last. So I thought it was important to take a belly shot for a change. Yes, my belly button is very prominent and has been since about month five, but I am tired of taping it down. Hopefully this little girl will come sooner than later. :)  As of today, I have just 12 days until my due date.

Sugar Cookies

So, you may be shocked to learn that I absolutely hate making sugar cookies. I love making ALL other kinds of cookies, but sugar cookies are far too much work for their worth, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind other people making me sugar cookies. I just don't like to make them myself, what with the flour mess and the cookie cutters and having to make the frosting and the sprinkles getting everywhere... But guess what folks, kids LOVE making sugar cookies. And apparently an important part (sometimes a VERY large part) of being a mother is doing things you don't necessarily like to do for the sake of the little ones. So, on October 1st, the kids came home from school bound and determined to bring in the month of October by making some Halloween sugar cookies. And guess what? I groaned inside for half a second, then I decided to oblige rather than put them off for a few weeks. And the smiles I received were well worth the effort (even if the cookies weren't).

  A winking smile from Annalise.

Preston loves sprinkles, and everything else sweet for that matter.

And I think this made Adelyn's month because I even let her mold the last bit of dough into Rapunzel-shaped cookies. I should get an award or something. :)

Joy of the Earth

I have had such a great time the last few weeks hosting Annalise and her Joy School friends. Joy of the Earth is probably my favorite Joy School unit. During the first week, we explored nature and went on a nature walk field trip (see post from September 20). The next week we learned about seeds and animals.

We planted these radish seeds and watched them grow. Now two weeks later, they are pretty hearty and Annalise is thrilled.

We used bird seed to make bird feeders with pine cones covered in peanut butter. Believe it or not, this little feeder once had twice as many seeds as it does now. The little birdies in this neighborhood are definitely packing it on for the winter.

We also did a little section on seasons, and we made leaf rubbings.

Play dough is always fun. We used cookie cutters that you could find in nature, like animals and flowers. Emily seems pleased.

As does Ariah.

Preston can always be found sitting on the table or counter top no matter how many times I ask him to sit on a chair. :)

It was fun to talk to the kids about what we get from animals: meat, dairy, leather, wool, etc. and to pretend like we were animals for a day. This wasn't anything out of the ordinary for Annalise though. Her favorite game is "The Animal Game" and her animal imitations are quite impressive.

During the final week, we talked about being good stewards to the earth. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! I took the kids on a walk where we cleaned up trash around the neighborhood. I've never seen kids so excited to find garbage.

Then we played at the playground as a reward for our hard work.

On the final day, we went on a field trip to my neighbor's large garden. She has a half-acre yard complete with nearly every plant and tree you can imagine: berry bushes, nut trees, fruit trees, carrots, onions, tomatoes, pumpkins, lettuce, squash....

She let the kids pick and eat all the raspberries they could find. They also got to take home their very own organic apple for snack time.

We have a letter of the week and the kids have fun making the letter out of different things. This time it was macaroni. Preston drew a Fire truck, a Flower, and a Flag on his paper, so Annalise did the same on hers. She is quite the little artist for just barely turning three! (And she has also apparently taught herself to spell her name: AiFEtio.)

Picture Day

School picture day was a little stressful because I had to get all three kids ready at three different times. But I think the pictures turned out great. I was just glad to get a portrait of each of them taken before the baby comes.

Adelyn: 2nd grade, 7 1/2 years old

 Preston: Kindergarten, 5 years old

Annalise: Joy School, 3 years old.

When I took Annalise to the school for her pictures, she took one look at the set-up and immediately started bawling and didn't want to do it. The photographer charmed her awhile, then had her sit on my lap for the pictures. Thank goodness it worked out and they were able to crop me out of it. :)
